New International Direct Flights to Chengdu

If you are a foreigner living in Chengdu, then your first taste of the city will most likely have been when you landed at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International airport. Those lucky few who arrived on a direct flight would no doubt have been grateful for the shortened journey time, as the other travellers landing after numerous stop-overs wearily made their way through immigration. If you have ever found yourself in this group of exhausted arrivals then fear not, because Chengdu is constantly opening new direct flight routes to destinations all over the world. The next time you leave the city, you may well find that you only need to board a plane once!

Chengdu has so far opened 77 international air routes (including cargo), mostly covering major cities in Europe and Asia-Pacific Region, making it the biggest hub of international flights in the central and western regions of China. Chengdu’s international accessibility continues to grow, and with the construction of Chengdu’s second international airport, Tianfu International Airport, due to be completed in 2019, the city will no doubt look to open even more direct flight routes when the airport officially opens to the public in 2020.

Even more good news for would-be travellers, from 24 – 27 September 2016, Chengdu’s Shuangliu Airport will host the 22nd World Route Development Forum, an international event where the top dogs of the commercial aviation industry will meet to discuss the industry’s future and debate the hottest issues facing the aviation market. With representatives from over 300 airlines and 700 airports coming to Chengdu, the forum will be a golden opportunity for Chengdu to open even more direct flight routes with other international airports.

This year, the city will open direct flight routes to Rome Fiumicino, Sydney (both Air China), Prague (Sichuan Airlines) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam Airlines). As part of its expansion plans in Asia, Ethiopian Airways is also expected to launch services to Chengdu in 2016. So far this year, China Eastern Airlines has already applied for opening two direct round-trip flights from Chengdu to two major cities in the Philippines: Manila and Cebu. The city is also considering opening more than 20 other international routes, connecting Chengdu to more cities in North America, Oceania, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
